"Shoot if you must, this old grey head, but spare your Country's flag", she said. These famous words are believed by most to have been said by patriot Barbara Fritchie, waving our flag out of the dormer of this house! Stay in Barbara's house, rebuilt in the 1920's, just upgraded to have all the things you'd expect in a hotel, but with the charm and patina of the late 1800's.
Located right on the famous Frederick Carroll Creek Linear park, and a block away from the downtown Frederick scene.
We purchased the house in January and completed renovations in April 2018, including an expanded bathroom, new kitchen, all new appliances, new HVAC, semi-period furnishings and decorations and more. Rumor has it that Barbara lived in this house while her sister (Hauer) lived in the house next door. (We offer this home too as the Historic Hauer House, it has a more industrial feel and it sleeps 11.)
The house is very cozy, comfortable and has all of the appointments of a top quality hotel. For a small house, it turned out to be quite spacious, warm and cozy. The fireplace is wood burning and we had it relined for safety- feel free to build a fire or we can help you. You'll find a little nook off the spacious living room with a small desk for doing some work, and behind you is a china closet with real Barbara Fritchie memorabilia.
The kitchen has small, European-sized appliances complete with a dishwasher, range, oven, microwave, refrigerator and garbage disposal. The dining room has a table set for 6 people but by adding 2 more leaves you can add more.
Upstairs you'll find a new brand new bathroom. Feel free to use the upper back porch accessible from the bathroom and have your morning coffee or an evening cocktail, watching people walk along Carroll Creek.
Barbara's room is nicely wallpapered with a queen bed. The second room has a comfy full-sized bed. There is a queen size sofa bed on the 1st floor.
We installed all new mini-split system HVAC units (4) and each major room can be individually controlled.
Barbara and her husband John, (a glove maker) lived in the house until Barbara passed away in 1862. John Whittier wrote the famous poem about Barbara's confrontation with the Confederate soldiers in 1863. The original house was wiped out by a flood from Carroll Creek in 1868. Due to the huge interest from around the world in Barbara Fritchie, locals in Frederick rebuilt the house to the original specifications in 1926. We believe the foundation and the floor are original from the 1820's. It is widely believed that no one has slept in the house since Barbara did in 1862 until we opened in April 2018.
Many people debate and dispute the Barbara Fritchie story but it is a story that we as Americans WANT to believe. We believe in our feisty women leaders, we LOVE our country, and you damn well better not mess with either one!
I will need to collect MD State sales tax separately of 6%.
Guests can access all areas of the house, including the back yard. We share the backyard with our other rental property next door.
We live about 10 minutes walking distance from the house, so we might swing by to welcome you if we are around, and certainly call if you need anything.
Other things to note
There are great restaurants within a block or two and plenty of great walking right along Carroll Creek, right next to the house. On a nice day, many people will stop to read the history plaque along Carroll Creek right outside the house. You are a short walk to great restaurants and night life as well as to Baker Park where you can catch a summer concert on Sunday nights. Walk along the creek from Baker Park to the east side of Frederick.
